Acquittal Summary

Pan Asian Rep is proud to continue its 40th Milestone Season with the American Premiere of Acquittal, which focuses on four women unjustly imprisoned in Pakistan in the 1980’s.

Acquittal focuses on four women in a Pakistan prison during the 1980’s - Zahida, a lawyer-activist; Mariam, a victim of rape; Jannat Bibi, trying to save her son; and Jamila accused of murder - and how they unite in solidarity to overcome injustice. The play was inspired by playwright Shahid Nadeem’s own imprisonment as a young man.

Playwright Shahid Nadeem says of his play, “Acquittal was written in 1987, while I was living in exile in London. It has a specific reference to the early 1980s, when General Zia-ul-Haq had implemented blatant discriminatory ‘Islamic’ laws, which galvanized the women’s movement in Pakistan.” Shahid Nadeem is now the Artistic Director of Ashoka Theatre in Pakistan.
