In Out of the Apple Orchard, A boy’s mischievous choices result in big trouble. By making up for his mistakes, he uncovers a kind, compassionate humanity.
An immigrant Jewish family escapes Lithuania for a better life in New York City, and Adam Bieman’s Bubbe, his grandmother, shares with him the injustices of antisemitic discrimination. In the fall of 1910, the family moves from the Lower East Side to the hamlet of Mountaindale in the Catskills for fresh country air. Papa is too sick to work and food is scarce. Seeing apples in the orchard on his way to school, a hungry twelve-year-old Adam cannot resist the ripe, red fruit, and soon his troubles begin.
From the award-winning book set in the fall of 1910, our enchanting production of Out of the Apple Orchard perfectly inspires the minds, and hearts of all who have been touched by this delightful book, play, and companion curriculum. Now it is branching out to New York’s Off-Broadway stage, opening on September 10th, 2023.
“Have you forgiven me then?” asked Adam, his eyes glistening.
“I do believe I have,” said Mr. Friedland. “You see, if I held the
anger in my heart, it would make me revengeful and unhappy.
It would have made me sick, too. Like eating a bad apple.”
