Ma-Yi Theater Company and Barrington Stage Company present The Chinese Lady based on the true story of Afong Moy, America’s first female Chinese immigrant, who was brought to America and put on display for a paying audience, directed by Ralph B. Peña (Among The Dead), and starring Shannon Tyo (Bright Half Life), and Daniel K. Isaac (The Gentleman Caller).
The Chinese Lady is inspired by the true story of America’s first female Chinese immigrant. A tale of dark poetic whimsy in this piercing portrait of America as seen through the eyes of a young Chinese woman; Afong Moy reflects on life in1834, as she is brought to the United States from Beijing and put on display for the American public as the “Chinese Lady.”

After a breakout season with the award-winning success of the musical KPOP, and with the closing of Mike Lew’s highly praised Teenage Dick – Ma-Yi announces the productions of Sesar & The Chinese Lady in repertory at Theatre Row.
