Long ago in an opulent palace, a powerful Tang dynasty emperor is forced to choose between his one true love and his people’s fate. During World War II, a young boy struggles to survive during the Japanese occupation. In this gripping production that moves back and forth through time, these two stories supernaturally converge in the sleek lobby of a modern day luxury hotel where Chinese rap stars, curious tourists and business tycoons mingle. In Cathay: Three Tales Of China, the country’s tumultuous history and bright future are brought head-to-head by master visual storyteller Ping Chong (Kwaidan, 2000) and the extraordinary puppeteers of the Shaanxi Folk Art Theatre. Featuring over sixty characters, rod, shadow and large-scale puppets are integrated with live actors and special effects in this triumphant triptych commissioned by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
