Like a bolt of lightning, Complexions has quickly shot to the forefront of the American dance scene. Founded by Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, “two of the greatest virtuosos ever to emerge from (Alvin) Ailey land” (New York Magazine), Complexions grounds its envelope-pushing creativity and quicksilver choreography firmly in the roots of classical ballet. From pointe to pop, these body-bending dancers execute high-octane work with dazzling style and brilliant artistry. Legs become precision timepieces placed at the 6 o’clock hour, swirling arms circulate like fans and torsos spin like twirling tops from every direction in a program that includes music by Nina Simone and Earth, Wind and Fire, and a world premiere by Rhoden.
This is a great introduction to dance for both girls and boys. The show is of the same caliber as something a dance enthusiast would see at the Joyce Theater. Inspired by social and political issues as well as human relationships, the company’s repertoire is deliberately contemporary and accessible to a wide range of audience tastes. This New York City-based company of dance thoroughbreds has awakened audiences to a new, exciting genre that combines the best of athleticism, lyricism, technical training and experience.
