The Bluest Eye Summary

Eleven year-old Pecola Breedlove desperately wants to be loved by her family and schoolmates. Instead, she faces constant ridicule and abuse. Blaming her dark skin, she prays for blue eyes – as blue as Shirley Temple’s, as blue as a blonde baby-doll’s – certain that they will deliver the affection she so longs for. Narrated by Pecola’s young neighbors, Claudia and Frieda MacTeer, The Bluest Eye is the heart-wrenching story of a young black girl’s tragic coming of age in 1940’s Ohio. “Simple, beautiful, powerfully acted and deftly directed” (Chicago Tribune), Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye is a poetic and piercingly relevant, must-see production from the acclaimed Steppenwolf Theatre Company.

Due to the intensity of the play, we felt that it would be better served in the intimate 199-seat The Duke on 42nd Street theater, where the audience and the actors share a closer connection.

Please note: While staged tastefully and respectfully, this show includes mature content, including references to incest and rape
