Grey Gardens Summary

Grey Gardens brings to life both the delightfully eccentric aunt and the cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Once among the brightest names in the pre-Camelot social register, these two women became East Hampton’s most notorious recluses, living in a dilapidated 28-room mansion. Set in two eras – in 1941 when the estate was in its prime and in 1973 when it was reduced to squalor – the musical tells the alternately hilarious and heartbreaking story of two indomitable women, Edith Bouvier Beale and her adult daughter “Little” Edie.

Grey Gardens Special Information

Tony Award winner Christine Ebersole plays mother Edith Bouvier Beale in Act 1 (taking place in 1941) and her daughter ‘Little’ Edie Beale in Act 2 (1973). Tony Award nominee Mary Louise Wilson plays mother Edith Bouvier Beale in Act 2 (1973).

For her dual perfomance in Grey Gardens, leading lady Christine Ebersole won an incredible 5 awards: a Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, Obie Award, special citation from the New York Drama Critics Circle and the Drama League’s 2006 Distinguished Performance of the Year Award. Ben Brantley of The New York Times called it “possibly the greatest performance I’ve ever seen in a musical.”
