A surreal beauty returns to The Joyce stage, as James Sewell’s intrepid ensemble of eight dancers infuses two of his most musically astute works with intelligence and heart. The 12-tone Schoenberg Serenade animates the dancers with choreographic wit and imagination, ferocious physicality, and a sense of spectacle. With six new segments added to the original five, the episodic Opera Moves, first shown in New York in 1991, features the over-the-top diva favorite Una Voce Poco Fa and Wagner’s sublime Liebestod. The dancers’ bodies sing the libretti — and one opera-trained dancer both sings and dances one aria — with translucent and soulful passion.
