Shogun Macbeth Summary

As directed by Ernest Abuba, Shogun Macbeth channels Shakespeare’s tragic tale of power and greed to the feudal military dictatorship of 12th century Japan – the Kamakura Period, a time of warring clans. In his adaptation, John R. Briggs retains Shakespeare’s language while interweaving classical Japanese traditions. Shogun Macbeth incorporates the art forms of Noh and Kyogen theatre, along with spectacular samurai sword fights, and the three witches become “Yojos,” obake creatures with supernatural powers. The New York Times has said, “It is …a Kurosawa film on stage…At its bloody heart, the play is still Macbeth with a universality transcending time, place and performance style.”

“Ernest Abuba directs a robust cast in a production that is by turns eerie, spirited and turbulent… “ -AP

“…An intriguing variation on Shakespeare’s classic…simple but striking… ‘SHOGUN MACBETH’ delivers!” -Frank Scheck, NY Post

“From the intense samurai battles to the ritual tea ceremonies to the three wonderfully weird Yojos, Shogun Macbeth is a captivating take on Shakespeare’s murderous tale of ambition and greed.” -Angela Ashman, Village Voice

“…Infused with intriguingly different cultural dimensions… brisk and imaginative…a mini-spectacle packed with stylized action and drama” -Ron Cohen, Backstage

“A taut production that is both visceral and dreamlike…Pan Asian Repertory’s SHOGUN MACBETH is breathtaking…. A powerful evening of theatre.” -Heather J. Violanti, NYTheatre.com

“As Lady Macbeth, Rosanne Ma is fantastic…the two primary leads consistently rise to the challenge of the play…” -Joe Bendel, JB Spins

“A deeply-felt Asian interpretation of Macbeth… with extraordinary power in its controlled movements…(Macbeth and Fujin Macbeth) effortlessly carry the play and are backed up by a fine ensemble.” -Dierdre Donovan, Curtain Up
